The Scotswood Masterplan outlines our plans for a new sustainable neighbourhood. The development will include a choice of quality homes, public spaces and parks and a vibrant high street and neighbourhood centre with a range of shops, workplaces and community facilities to meet people’s everyday needs. The Masterplan provides for improved public transport with better access to wider employment, retail, leisure and culture destinations. It promotes high quality design, challenging the existing standard approach to the built environment to deliver higher quality new homes and neighbourhoods. In total 1800 new homes, of which 25% will be affordable, and around 5,500sqm of retail, commercial and community use floor space will be delivered. There will also be a major cultural programme that will help existing and new communities to celebrate all that is good and distinctive about the area’s heritage.
Neighbourhood management initiatives in the area, in both Scotswood and Benwell, will work closely with local people and agencies to deliver projects to improve security, the environment and community involvement and cohesion in the area. Community regeneration schemes to tackle unemployment along with the Excelsior Academy (opened in 2008) will help improve local people’s quality of life.
