Riverside Dene is currently undergoing major improvements involving the City Council, Bridging NewcastleGateshead, New Deal for Communities and YHN, along with the private sector. The complete project will involve investment of around £90 million over the next six years. This will transform the multi-storey towers blocks and the surrounding area.
Key improvements will include: complete internal redevelopment of the tower blocks; a new external look for all the blocks; and better green spaces to relax in. A number of the blocks will be retained for social rent, and a potential new biomass district heating system will ensure a lower carbon footprint and lower fuel bills for residents.
The wider project includes improved retail and community facilities in the area, with an improved commercial offer, bringing the Mary Trevelyan school site into use. Development at the nearby Loadman Street site will bring about a significant number of new homes in one of the first major new build schemes in the west of the city in a number of years. The redevelopment of the retail offer and wider environment will have a positive impact on the area and help create a demand for the quality housing.
