If there’s one thing you’ll find in our libraries it’s paper, tonnes of the stuff. But take a look at the beautiful paper sculptures below and you’ll realise there’s more to this versatile medium than you think.

Edinburgh’s mysterious paper artist

On 2 March 2011 a paper sculpture of a tree (how ironic!) was left on a table in the Scottish Poetry Library. That was the first of 11 sculptures anonymously left at museums, libraries and bookshops in Edinburgh. Most had a note attached and included the words, ‘A gift in support of libraries, books, works, ideas…’ The sculptures captured imaginations across the world, and even went on tour in libraries across Scotland last year. The artist remains unknown to this day!

The 'poetree'

Brian Dettmer’s carved books

One day Brian decided to cut into a book with a craft knife…please don’t do this to our library books! But please do enjoy the stunning designs he has created by carving into the pages of old books to reveal new relationships between illustrations and text.

A book sculpture by Brian Dettmer

Eric Standley’s multi-layered paper sculptures

Eric Standley uses a laser to cut intricate designs into pieces of card which he then layers to create stunning works of art. The piece below is from his ‘Either/Or Decreed’ collection and measures 18 inches square. We think this one looks like a stained glass window, overgrown with a mass of spindly roots.

Close up detail of sculpture

Michael Hansmeyer’s paper columns

Zurich-based artist Michael Hansmeyer is a ‘computational architect’ who produces incredibly complex columns from 1mm thick card cut to precision by lasers. He builds up the detailed columns in layers – the example below has around 15 million facets on its surface. Incredible.

Paper column by Michael Hansmeyer

Ingrid Siliakus’ pop-up cityscapes

Dutch artist Ingrid Siliakus makes 3D cities from single sheets of paper. Her designs are so detailed that they include balconies, windows and even people. They’re based around a 90 degree fold, just like traditional pop-up books.

Night and day pop-up cityscape

Feeling inspired?

Take a look in the art and crafts books at your local library for ideas. For starters, try our books on origami!

It was the decade of Margaret Thatcher, huge mobile phones, the ZX81 and Amstrad home computers. Were you into big hair, batwing sleeves and legwarmers? Did you have a BMX bike, a Cabbage Patch Doll or a Rubik’s Cube? Did you go to Tyne Tees to see The Tube? Can you remember you first trip on the Metro? Did you watch Kevin Keegan score goals at Newcastle United?

If you lived, worked or studied in Newcastle during the 1980s Tyne Bridge Publishing want to hear from you. After the runaway success of their books on the 50s, 60s, and 70s, they couldn’t ignore the requests to do the same for the 80s. They hope to publish ‘Sweet Dreams! 1980s Newcastle’ in Autumn 2013 but they need your help.

If you have a story or a photo from the 1980s please get in touch by emailing tynebridge@newcastle.gov.uk. We’re also interested in using copies of posters or concert tickets.

Family history can become addictive and at Newcastle Libraries it’s also free!

You don’t need to sign up for expensive online websites. Visit any of our libraries and you can get immediate access to Ancestry and Find my Past. Both websites have access to a huge range of genealogical collections including births, marriages and deaths, census records, passenger lists and military records. Records are available from all over the world and they’re constantly being expanded. If you’ve never tried it before and would like some advice book a free internet taster session with one of our staff by phoning 0191 2774100.

You can also visit our heritage centre at the City Library to find more local and family history records. As well as being one of only seven regional centres for the GRO births deaths and marriages, we also hold other records including the adoption index and full indexes of overseas life events dating back to 1761.

You can also search the largest newspaper collection in the region, with 69 titles dating from 1710 to the present day. Or you might want to access newspapers online, including gems like the Police Gazette.

We also hold regional parish registers, census records and voters lists, maps, over 100,000 photographs and a huge collection of material about the history of the region.

Visit your local library and start searching!

Step back in time and view nearly 1000 photographs from the newly digitised Lazlo Torday collection. The photographs show Newcastle during the 1960’s and 70’s and were originally bought by Newcastle Libraries from a local dealer in the 1980’s. Up until now the photographs have only been available to view in person by looking through the 100 albums or in the 16 boxes of colour transparencies held at City Library.

Laszlo Torday (1890-1975) was a Hungarian chemical engineer, who was also a keen and gifted amateur photographer. He arrived in Tynemouth in January 1940 and eventually moved to Jesmond. His photographs reflect his interest in the streets and people of Newcastle.

Kath Cassidy, City Libraries Heritage Manager, said: “The opportunity to digitise 1,000 images from the Torday Collection means that they can now be enjoyed by a much wider audience. The images provide a fascinating glimpse into the recent past, showing just how much has changed and what has remained the same. We’re keen to find out more about the people in the images. If you recognise anyone – please use the Flickr site to let us know.”

Children’s author Guy Bass introduced us to Stitch Head, the almost-human creation of Mad Professor Erasmus, during the recent Juice Festival. He began life locked away in Castle Grotteskew befriending the other creatures lurking there (that’s Stitch Head, not Guy…).

Author Guy Bass had us all in stitches as we got a glimpse of his childhood hopes of being a superhero! And pirates and professors competed at our Stitch Head event to be the best dressed characters, while budding artists and authors put their minds to poems, sea shanties and creatures creation. The event a City Library was a great success thanks to the children, mums, dads and grandparents and volunteers who came along. Well done to everyone who took part!

We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped at the Stitch Head event, especially our young volunteers from Juice and iScream and also to Lemington Riverside School who had done some fabulous work in preparation for Guy’s visit.

Children's author Guy Bass introduced us to Stitch Head, the almost-human creation of Mad Professor Erasmus, during the recent Juice Festival. He began life locked away in Castle Grotteskew befriending the other creatures lurking there (that's Stitch Head, not Guy...).

Borrow Stitch Head books from Newcastle Libraries.

Visit Guy Bass' website.

To find out more about how and why Guy became children's author listen to the interview with him below recorded with young volunteers Julia, Leah and Artum.

We have regular crafts, story times and activities for children at all our libraries. To find out more phone 0191 2774100 or email information@newcastle.co.uk.

We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped at the Stitch Head event, especially our young volunteers from Juice and iScream and also to Lemington Riverside School who had done some fabulous work in preparation for Guy’s visit.</itunes:summary>

Are you aged 65 or over? Do you have interesting stories to tell of times gone by in Newcastle? If so, we would like to invite you to join our Memory Box project!

What is Memory Box?

‘Memory Box’ is a local history project in which older residents of the city work with a professional storyteller to recall and record their personal memories of life in Newcastle.

Voice recordings of the stories are combined with pictures to create a fascinating archive of how life used to be. The archive will become a valuable resource for anyone who is interested in the history of Newcastle during the last century.

Where and when?

We aim to make the sessions sociable and fun, with refreshments provided. It will be a chance to meet new people and to hear their stories and to share your own. We will not make a charge for the workshops, but if you sign up, we ask you to commit to attending all 6 sessions, or as many as you can.

The sessions will be run by friendly staff who will guide you every step of the way.
You will not need to bring anything, just yourself and your memories!

High Heaton Library
Every Monday, 10 am – 12.30pm from 29 October to 3 December

Book lovers and collectors will have the chance to bag a bargain in our upcoming book sale.

The sale will include out-of-date reference books and non-fiction titles, damaged or unwanted fiction and DVDs/CDs which are no longer required.

The sale will be open to the public at the City Library on Saturday 29 September from 9.30am until 5pm and then on Sunday 30 September from 11am until 3pm.

Prices start at 50p for paperbacks and CDs, and bargain hunters will get the chance to take advantage of a special 3 for 2 deal during on the Sunday afternoon. Any unneeded specialist stock has been priced based on standard commercial rates on dedicated second hand book sale websites.

Cllr Veronica Dunn, Newcastle City Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Services, said: “Our city libraries are proud to offer all our members the best and most up to date selection of books and publications however, in order for us to make room for newer titles we need to refresh our stock. All those titles which are no longer in demand will be available to buy at our book sale which is an excellent opportunity for readers to pick up a book or other items for themselves or as a gift for a friend or family member.

“All money raised from the sale will be reinvested back into the city’s library service which will ensure we can continue to provide the books our members need for research or for leisure.”

In case you’re wondering what this is all about… a scrummdiddlyumptious time was had by all who took part in the Roald Dahl Day celebrations at our libraries last week. Story times featured the Enormous Crocodile with birthday wishes to the BFG (who thinks he is hundreds of years old but is really 30). Big dreams were captured on dream labels to send to the Dream Big competition on the Roald Dahl Day website and we spotted lots of beards in the Big Beard count! Beards on books, beards on people, beards on statues … East End Library beat everyone by quite a long whisker!

One of our star chiddlers who took part wrote this Revolting Rhyme – thanks Archie!

Once a girl called Sue
Fell head first into a stew
She came out covered in the stuff
Only to meet her father’s cuff.

Last Saturday we had a brilliant afternoon with developers from the Reflections Ubisoft studio which is based here in Newcastle. They came along to talk to young people about careers in the games industry and also hosted interactive workshops so that anyone could get hands on to learn how games are made. The talk was packed with an attentive audience and the developers were more than happy to answer any questions.

Some of the game developers spoke to teenage volunteers from our iScream group at City Library about what it’s like to make computer games for a living. Listen to the interview below.

From comments we received on the day from both parents and young people is it clear that many who attended the event went away feeling inspired. We hope we can do something similar in the future!

Sting has recently been taking some nostalgic walks around Newcastle and Tyneside from the comfort of his home in Italy! This is thanks to a new book co-authored by one of his former teachers at St Cuthbert’s High School, Peter Donaghy. Peter, along with John Laidler, has just published ‘Discovering NewcastleGateshead’ which contains twenty-six walks around Tyneside, packed with detailed information about local people, places and events.

The authors are giving a free talk about their book at Gosforth Library on Thursday 13 September at 2.30pm. To book a place phone 0191 2771400 or email information@newcastle.gov.uk.

Sting says, “This has provided me with a wonderful way to be reacquainted with the rich landscape and historical byways of my Tyneside home”. While he is full of praise for the efforts of the authors he couldn’t resist expressing his disappointment that “the great borough of Wallsend had been inexplicably excised from the authors’ selection” and suggested that it was probably worth a separate book of its own! However, the authors were quick to point out that Wallsend featured in two walks in their earlier book, ‘Metro Walks’, where they mentioned young Sting’s family home.

Peter and John, who have lived all their lives in Newcastle, say that now they are retired they have been able to examine the area much more closely and have discovered countless aspects which they hadn’t realised even existed.

On a beautiful sunny day 30 volunteers from across Newcastle gave up an hour of their time to help people in the city centre find out more about taking their first steps online. The gang of volunteers arrived at Monument at 1pm (armed with laptops, flip cameras, digital cameras, iPads and smartphones!) ready to speak to members of the public.

Thanks to the Tyneside Cinema, the big screen was fired up with information about getting online and how to pledge for superfast connectivity. Jonathan Miles from BBC Newcastle introduced the event in great style and really got the crowd interested. Jonathan also introduced Cllr Ann Schofield, the council’s Digital Champion, who spoke about the importance of getting online in Newcastle.

The volunteers then went into the crowds gathered at Monument to spread the word!

What we achieved:

• 193 pledges for superfast broadband
• 25,958 Twitter accounts reached on the day via the hashtag #digitalhour
• 17 people signed up to be Digital Champions

Thanks to everyone involved who made this happen!

One of our volunteers commented:

“It was good to see such a positive response to signing the pledge for Newcastle to be able to access faster broadband use. That will facilitate more new users”

Special thanks to Jackie Delaney and Simon Clydesdale from the Department of Work and Pensions who rallied 16 volunteers to the cause. A great time was had by all…roll on the next event!

On Tuesday 31 July from 1pm – 2pm volunteers from Newcastle Libraries and our partner organisations will be at Monument giving up a digital hour to help members of the public get online. The volunteers will be armed with mobile phones, laptops and digital cameras in order to encourage people to have a go!

The digital hour, in association with the BBC and the Give an Hour campaign, will also celebrate the summer of sport that the country and Newcastle are currently enjoying. We will encourage people to go online to find out about their favourite Olympic sports and athletes and explain how to watch Olympic events online.

You can follow the events on twitter using the hashtag #digitalhour for everything that is happening in Newcastle. Why don’t you give up a digital hour to help someone you know get online?

This event is part of a larger digital inclusion campaign that Newcastle City Council has been running through Newcastle Libraries. Ask at your local library about taking part in a free internet taster session or for more information phone 0191 2774100.

Don’t forget to pledge your support to get Superfast broadband across Newcastle. I want faster broadband.

Newcastle Libraries’ former mobile library will carry on its community work by helping local charity St. Cuthberts Care support some of Newcastle’s most vulnerable people. After the mobile library was withdrawn from service earlier this year councillors decided to offer the vehicle to a good cause and invited applications from local charities to take over the running of the vehicle.

The former mobile library will replace the two buses St. Cuthberts Care they currently use to provide their 5p Bus service. The 5p Bus travels around our region’s neediest areas, offering essential good quality second-hand clothes, bedding, children’s toys, books and on occasions, brand new toiletries, all for just 5p an item. Find out more about the 5p Bus.

We were delighted to be included in the ‘Write Around The Toon‘ project this year. This is a creative writing opportunity for Newcastle and Northumbria university students who have taken up 20 short-term residencies in several iconic locations around Newcastle and Gateshead.

You may have noticed, or even chatted to, our writer in residence Helen Limon. Helen supported customers with their creative writing in March as part of International Women’s Day. Whilst here she observed how the library functioned and the customer’s use of our space with the aim of writing a short story to encourage others to visit the library.

The launch for ‘Write Around The Toon’ took place at Northern Stage and this was the first time staff were able to hear the finished story. Read ‘What would X do?’ here.

Since then Helen has completed her book ‘Om Shanti Babe’, which is due to be published in September and she will be able to answer your questions at a ‘meet the author’ session on Saturday 22 September. The session will be followed by a unique workshop supported by the dance group SANA Crew, to help young writers to describe book characters by actions and movements. For more information phone 0191 2774100 or email information@newcastle.gov.uk.

We recently had the pleasure of an evening with local author Rachael H. Dixon at City Library. She was promoting her new first novel ‘Slippery Souls’ – an urban fantasy set at the seaside in Sunray Bay, featuring a talking dog, werewolves and a vampire with OCD! Rachael read some extracts from her book then answered a number of questions from the audience. It was fascinating to hear how Rachael developed the concept and story line for her book. Some of her ideas evolve from the vivid dreams that she has! She is hoping to write another two books to complete the Sunray Bay trilogy. We hope to welcome Rachael back in the future. Reserve a copy of Slippery Souls online.

With the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee fast approaching we’re planning to mark the occassion in style, including a celebration outside City Library. Head along to Princess Square on Saturday 2 June from 1pm – 4pm!

Party goers will be treated to demonstrations of 1950s inspired hair and make up, print and bunting making workshops, as well as a Lindy Hop 1950s dance and live music from Maine Street Jazzmen. And become a queen for a day in the ‘You’ve Been Crowned!’ pop-up coronation photobooth!

This event has been supported by Marks & Spencer on Northumberland Street who will be displaying the community artwork made on the day in its main shop window. The Sheriff of Newcastle, Cllr Margaret Wood, will also be enjoying the Jubilee celebrations with City Library visitors and local residents.

There’s something for everyone – take a look at our brochure to see what’s on offer.

View our Queen’s Diamond Jubilee events (pdf, 467KB).

New exhibition opening!
In City Library on Friday 1 June at 11am, the Lord Mayor will be opening our new exhibition ‘Sixty Glorious Years’ which celebrates the Queen’s reign and the ways in which the region has changed since the early 1950’s. Situated in the book gallery on level four, the exhibition is very interactive and visitors will be able to handle and look through the fascinating royal material from our archives.

Two rare silent films showing two royal visits to Tyneside will also play continuously between 12noon and 5pm on level 2 of City Library. The first film shows the visit of HRH King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to Gateshead on in 1939 and is believed to be one of the earliest known colour films to feature Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. The second film features a recording of the visit of a young Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip to Tyneside in 1954.

The City Library run a computer session in partnership with Deaflink every four weeks. The sessions are aimed at learners who have hearing difficulties or who are deaf and our partner, Deaflink, provide British Sign Language volunteers for the sessions. Library staff cover a range of topics – from digital photography to emailing to internet surfing to family history! The partnership is working well and more sessions are planned for June and July on online shopping and health information.

A great time was had by all…so much so that the next session will be about heritage too!

This year’s Jesmond Community Festival kicked off with the traditional Festival Parade lead by the Town Crier through the local streets of Jesmond, finishing at West Jesmond Primary School for the Grand Festival Fair. We manned the Newcastle Libraries stall in a prime sunny position, selling our wares and promoting reading. The weather was unusually kind that day so locals were out in full force – the free eggs and sausages from our local Tesco’s helped too!

During the festival we had a ‘character trail’ competition in which children had to find their favourite book characters, like the Gruffalo and Peppa Pig, hidden in the library to find clues to solve mystery word. We had over 60 entries and picked three deserving winners. The children really enjoyed taking part.

Our ‘Tyne, Rhyme and Wine’ poetry evening included light hearted performances from the three North East poets Sheree Mack, Marilyn Longstaff and Chris Robinson. Lunchtime musical recital from local flautist (a person who plays the flute!) Mary Mooney proved to be very popular with our local residents and Ian Gillard took budding young detectives on a journey of discovery in a forensics workshop. All of the events were well attended and everyone commented on how much they had enjoyed them!

Archive film footage recording one hundred years of North East sport will be showcased at two venues as part of this year’s Late Shows. The newly digitised footage will feature at both the Discovery Museum and Newcastle City Library on Saturday 19 May from 7pm – 10pm.

The one hour film show reels will run on continuous loop throughout the evening, drop in at any time.

The free film shows will include footage of Newcastle United taking on Sunderland AFC at St James’ Park in 1913, athletics and swimming competitions in Gateshead Stadium and Tynemouth open air pool in the 1960s, and an array of amateur films of sports and gala days across the North East.

Tynemouth Open Air Swimming Pool, 1963

A number of sporting events filmed as part of the centenary of the Blaydon Races in 1962 will also feature. There will also be regional television news stories from the 1970s and 1980s revisiting the more recent sporting past, examining the early careers of local heroes Brendan Foster and Paul Gascoigne.

On 23 April, Newcastle Libraries celebrated World Book Night in style. This was a chance for us to share the joy of reading, both inside and outside of the library. Over one hundred staff and customers applied to be book givers, and we distributed a staggering 2400 FREE books across the city, double what we did last year.

As it was the date of Shakespeare’s birth (and death) we decided to kick start the programme with a book swap at the Theatre Royal while the unveiling of their statue ‘Mercutio’ took place. A total of one hundredbooks were given out within an hour!

Library staff, teenage ‘My Voice’ volunteers, members of our children’s reading group and our local councillor distributed books across the city centre, in coffee shops, bars and the Tyneside Cinema.

The celebration continued with a performance from Silver Linings which got the audience to dancing and singing in the atrium. The atmosphere was already buzzing when we welcomed our fabulous visiting author Adele Parks, who was excited to be involved with World Book Night, and did a fantastic ‘meet the author’ session. The audience were gripped with tales of Adele’s life and the inspiration behind her novels which included her latest title ‘About Last Night’. Our ‘My Voice’ volunteers excitedly interviewed Adele without any hesitation. Listen to this interview below.

We also involved talented local actors ‘Spectrum Arts’ who spent their Sunday mornings rehearsing intensely for ‘Shakespeare’s Greatest Hits’. Customers followed the group around the building enthralled in the scenes and costumes.

We were fortunate to be one of several satellite venues to live stream a World Book Night event from Queen Elizabeth Hall on London’s Southbank where top authors helped spread the message of how empowering reading can be.

If you would like to be part of World Book Night 2013 register your details. From personal experience, this is a chance not to be missed!

An update from Linda Routledge, Library and Information Assistant…

At the recent arts and crafts club at City Library we had great fun making a 3D spring flower arrangement and Origami jumping frogs. We started the session with some jokes from the book ‘Silly Jokes and Giggles’ by Philip Yates which broke the ice and with the new members of the group. It was great to have a mixture of boys and girls attending, with ages ranging from six to fourteen. We all agreed that the next session cannot come quick enough. The only thing missing was time, which we ran out off, so as the saying goes time flies when you’re having fun!

Ask at your local library to find out about your nearest free craft session, or alternatively phone 0191 2774100 or email information@newcastle.gov.uk.

Local photographer Keith Pattison spent a week at Cruddas Park Library taking photographs of the customers who visited. They either held up the book they borrowed of wrote down the reason for their trip to the library. His innovative project highlights the many different ways people use their library and looks at the role libraries play in the local community. The images have been compiled in his new book, ‘face BOOK – A Week in the Life of a Branch Library’, which will be launched alongside Keith’s exhibition on Tuesday 24 April at 10:30am at Cruddas Park Shopping Centre. You can also take a look at the images online on Keith’s website.

View the face BOOK images

David Almond, celebrated author of the children’s book ‘Skellig’ will be supporting the opening of the new exhibition. Tony Durcan, Director of Culture, Libraries and Lifelong Learning, said: “Libraries continue to play such a valuable role in our communities and this exhibition and book will give people the chance to learn why they continue to be important to those who use them. Keith has done a wonderful job in bringing the community together for this project so I am delighted to be helping support this exhibition.”

face BOOK will remain open at Unit 12, Cruddas Park Shopping Centre until Saturday 5 May 2012.
