On 23 April, Newcastle Libraries celebrated World Book Night in style. This was a chance for us to share the joy of reading, both inside and outside of the library. Over one hundred staff and customers applied to be book givers, and we distributed a staggering 2400 FREE books across the city, double what we did last year.

As it was the date of Shakespeare’s birth (and death) we decided to kick start the programme with a book swap at the Theatre Royal while the unveiling of their statue ‘Mercutio’ took place. A total of one hundredbooks were given out within an hour!

Library staff, teenage ‘My Voice’ volunteers, members of our children’s reading group and our local councillor distributed books across the city centre, in coffee shops, bars and the Tyneside Cinema.

The celebration continued with a performance from Silver Linings which got the audience to dancing and singing in the atrium. The atmosphere was already buzzing when we welcomed our fabulous visiting author Adele Parks, who was excited to be involved with World Book Night, and did a fantastic ‘meet the author’ session. The audience were gripped with tales of Adele’s life and the inspiration behind her novels which included her latest title ‘About Last Night’. Our ‘My Voice’ volunteers excitedly interviewed Adele without any hesitation. Listen to this interview below.

We also involved talented local actors ‘Spectrum Arts’ who spent their Sunday mornings rehearsing intensely for ‘Shakespeare’s Greatest Hits’. Customers followed the group around the building enthralled in the scenes and costumes.

We were fortunate to be one of several satellite venues to live stream a World Book Night event from Queen Elizabeth Hall on London’s Southbank where top authors helped spread the message of how empowering reading can be.

If you would like to be part of World Book Night 2013 register your details. From personal experience, this is a chance not to be missed!

Julia has a background in theatre studies and the arts having completed her degree at Nottingham Trent University and then going on to work on the costume design of theatre companies across the country. Julia creates gowns, corsets and accessories including jewellery, headdresses and fans. She has designed unique one-off costumes for theatre productions and masquerade balls.

Before designing a gown, Julia researches many sources including literature, films and portraits. She drafts her design using an historical pattern as a basis and then makes a toile. A toile is a garment made up in cheap fabric such as cotton so that alterations and experiments can be made. After completing the design it usually takes from 2-3 weeks to complete a gown depending on its complexity. Julia then designs the accessories when the dress is complete.

You can listen to Julia talk about her work in the podcast below and there is a video of the dresses she presented on YouTube.

An innovative artwork created to celebrate Chinese New Year will be launched this Friday 12 February at City Library.

The artwork, Paper Tiger, by artists Chun-Chao Chiu and Matthew Blackman, has been commissioned by Newcastle City Council and the Chinese Festivity Group, organisers of the yearly Chinese celebrations in Chinatown.

The artists have been busy at work creating a dynamic new sculpture of a tiger in the atrium of the library, which has resulted in an amazing reaction from visitors who have taken a keen interest in both the background to the artwork and expertise of the creators.

You can hear the artists talk about Paper Tiger in the podcast below.

Paper Tiger stands at approximately 2.5m x 2.5m x 2.5m, and has been created using paper and fabric, applied over a bamboo and wire framework. Painted with rich decoration, the final piece will combine both traditional and contemporary approaches in the design of the sculpture’s shape, its surface pattern and construction. Look out for updates on the Tiger’s progress on our Facebook page and @ToonLibraries on Twitter!

Following Chinese tradition, the final artistic stroke to be added to the Tiger is the painting of the eyes; an honour bestowed to an important and worthy member of the community. Cllr Pauline Allen, Newcastle City Council’s Executive Member for Culture, Leisure and Customer Services, was delighted to be invited to complete this task which will take place on Friday 12 February at 12noon after a traditional lion dance. Cllr Allen said:

“The Chinese New Year celebrations are always a major event in the city’s calendar and it was my honour to add the eyes to this wonderful paper tiger. Newcastle’s Chinese community play such an important role in the life of the city and as this year marks the year of the Tiger I would like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year.”

Angela Forster, Libraries’ development manager said:

“The City Library is delighted to play host to this unique and dramatic piece of art, it has been fascinating to watch it being constructed and it has attracted a lot of interest from customers and passers by. The tiger will be a focal point in the Library for some time to come and will draw attention to the Library’s collection of Chinese books. Thanks to support from the Festival of Learning, we were also able to honour Paper Tiger with a traditional good luck blessing from the Chinese Lion, performed by dancers and musicians from Edmund Ng’s Choi Lee Fut Kung Fu Club.”

Chinese New Year will be celebrated in Newcastle on Sunday 14th February. he most important event in the Chinese calendar will be celebrated in the city’s Chinatown district including Stowell Street, Bath Lane and surrounding areas.

Firecrackers, lion and dragon dances, symbolising good fortune and prosperity for the year ahead, will bring the streets of Newcastle to life in a dazzling display of oriental pageantry that heralds The Year of the Tiger.
