<p>Come to a unique event at City Library where young volunteers will be showing older people how to  get online. We will be demonstrating a variety of gadgets, from laptops  and smartphones to kindles and more…</p>
<p>This event is in partnership with the Elders Council and Newcastle Youth  Council.  It is aimed at encouraging older people (aged 50 years and  upwards) to get online. Come along for what promises to be a fun day!</p>

<p>This year Newcastle Libraries are hosting a packed programme of  events to celebrate Local History Month this May including a talk on the history of Newcastle United by club historian Paul Joannou and exciting news from the Secret Bunker/North project which hopes to restore the grade II listed RAF Blakelaw World War 2 bunker.</p>
<p>We are hosting events both at City Library and across  our branch libraries.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">BBC First Click aims to provide easy to understand guides to computers and the internet for complete beginners. At City Library the over 55s can connect one click at a time on a BBC First Click short course provided by staff from the Department of Work and Pensions.</p>
<p>The course lasts one day and is split into two one and a half hour sessions with lunch break. There are the following dates to choose from:</p>
<p>Friday 4 March<br />
Friday 18 March, or<br />
Friday 25 March</p>

<p>There are more than 9 million people in Britain still not using computers and the internet and this could be the perfect opportunity to give them a go! It doesn’t matter if you’ve never even touched a computer before, or if you already know a little bit.</p>
<p>Would you like to learn how to stay in touch and share photographs with family and friends using e-mail, Facebook or Twitter? Or did you get an e-reader, mp3 player or digital camera for Christmas and you’re not quite sure how to get the most out of it? Then why not let us help you make your New Year’s resolution to stay in touch or learn something new at one of our introductory sessions.</p>

<p><strong>Silver Surfers: A Focus on Digital Photography</strong><br />

Thursday 21 October, City Library</p>
<p>Learn the basics of getting the best out of your digital photographs at our Silver Surfers group suitable for the over 55s. It&#8217;s a great way to learn more about using computers and the internet in an informal and friendly setting. Meet people with similar experiences to you. The emphasis on learning from each other but library staff are on hand too to help solve problems you may be having with your computer and the internet.</p>
<p>The Silver Surfers group meets every first Thursday of the month in the ICT Suite at City Library. Meetings so far have included subjects such as how to manage folders,  how to set up an email account, and how to use the internet. <p><strong>An Introduction to Uploading Digital Photos</strong><br />

<p>If you’ve ever wondered how to transfer your photos from a  camera to a PC effectively this taster class is for you. The class will also go through the basics of simple photo editing and putting photographs online using sites such as Flickr.</p>

<p>As part of  <a href="http://www.instituteofcustomerservice.com/2167/About-NationalCustomerServiceWeek.html">National Customer Service Week</a>, Newcastle Libraries are launching a new designated area on level 3 of City Library to highlight the materials and resources available to help support our visually impaired (VIP) customers.</p>
<p>The area will include the following:</p>
<p>-A computer with a 22” screen which will have Supernova screen magnification software, a large keys keyboard and headphones.</p>
<p>-A new book and document magnifier will be available and staff will provide a demonstration of this.</p>
<p>-A new ‘Penfriend’ which will assist customers choosing library materials by communicating the item details.</p>
<p>-Large print newspapers will be available.</p>
<p>-Materials  will be displayed in a variety of formats, including spoken word, MP3, DVD with audio description and large print books.</p>
<p>-Samples of the Talking Newspaper will be available, supplied by <a href="http://www.tynesoundnews.org.uk/">Tyne Sound News</a>, and there will be the option of joining the scheme.</p>
<p>Customers will be able to work independently or alongside staff on a one to one basis in the VIP area. Internet taster sessions are available on a range of subjects including family history and online shopping.</p>
<p>There will also be information regarding supportive organistions such as the <a href="http://www.rnib.org.uk/Pages/Home.aspx">RNIB</a> and <a href="http://www.nhs.uk/Pages/HomePage.aspx">NHS Choices</a>.  Magnifying sheets and bookmarks will be given out at the launch on 4 October and will continue to be on sale after the launch.</p>
<p>An event for visually impaired readers called Touching the Past is planned on 7 October from 1pm to 3pm to give an insight into the books and other historical resources held in the Heritage section. To book a place at this session phone 0191 2774100 or email information@newcastle.gov.uk.</p>
