With the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee fast approaching we’re planning to mark the occassion in style, including a celebration outside City Library. Head along to Princess Square on Saturday 2 June from 1pm – 4pm!

Party goers will be treated to demonstrations of 1950s inspired hair and make up, print and bunting making workshops, as well as a Lindy Hop 1950s dance and live music from Maine Street Jazzmen. And become a queen for a day in the ‘You’ve Been Crowned!’ pop-up coronation photobooth!

This event has been supported by Marks & Spencer on Northumberland Street who will be displaying the community artwork made on the day in its main shop window. The Sheriff of Newcastle, Cllr Margaret Wood, will also be enjoying the Jubilee celebrations with City Library visitors and local residents.

There’s something for everyone – take a look at our brochure to see what’s on offer.

View our Queen’s Diamond Jubilee events (pdf, 467KB).

New exhibition opening!
In City Library on Friday 1 June at 11am, the Lord Mayor will be opening our new exhibition ‘Sixty Glorious Years’ which celebrates the Queen’s reign and the ways in which the region has changed since the early 1950’s. Situated in the book gallery on level four, the exhibition is very interactive and visitors will be able to handle and look through the fascinating royal material from our archives.

Two rare silent films showing two royal visits to Tyneside will also play continuously between 12noon and 5pm on level 2 of City Library. The first film shows the visit of HRH King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to Gateshead on in 1939 and is believed to be one of the earliest known colour films to feature Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. The second film features a recording of the visit of a young Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip to Tyneside in 1954.

An update from Linda Routledge, Library and Information Assistant…

At the recent arts and crafts club at City Library we had great fun making a 3D spring flower arrangement and Origami jumping frogs. We started the session with some jokes from the book ‘Silly Jokes and Giggles’ by Philip Yates which broke the ice and with the new members of the group. It was great to have a mixture of boys and girls attending, with ages ranging from six to fourteen. We all agreed that the next session cannot come quick enough. The only thing missing was time, which we ran out off, so as the saying goes time flies when you’re having fun!

Ask at your local library to find out about your nearest free craft session, or alternatively phone 0191 2774100 or email information@newcastle.gov.uk.

We recently held the first session of the new Sunday arts and crafts club started in City Library. This was the first time we had had the crafts on a Sunday. At 2:30pm prompt the doors opened and to my surprise there were nine children already eagerly waiting to join the club!

After some quick introductions to each other, we enjoyed the story of the owl who was afraid of the dark. We then made an owl using lambs wool, which came all the way from Sky in Scotland (kindly donated by a member of staff) some twigs, leaves and a lot of imagination.

After some wonderful creations of barn owls and tawny owls, we had time left over to make a pot-pourri cup, decorated with ribbon and diamantes, for each of the children’s mums as a Mother’s Day gift. A lovely afternoon was had by all!

The FREE children’s arts and crafts club is the last Sunday of every month at 2:30pm, following the regular children’s story time, and is suitable for ages 8 and above (under 8s can be accompanied by an adult). The next session is on 25 March 2012.

The Gala Weekend festival finale will be held over two days for the first time ever! Children can get creative in the many arts and crafts sessions taking place and storytellers and other performers will be dropping in throughout the weekend.

This year’s Northern Children’s Book Festival is based around the theme ‘Dream a Little Dream’ which captures the creativity and imagination involved in reading. Everyone likes to read before bed and the dreams we have are heavily influenced by the stories we read in our favourite books. ‘Dream a Little Dream’ sums up the unicorns, magic carpets, castles and witches we’ve all discovered in the land of nod.

World Book Day is on Thursday 3 March and we are celebrating with a range of events across the City.

Families invited from a local children’s centre will get the day off to a literary start with a special book themed breakfast provided by Starbucks. The Bookstart Bookcrawl will then launch in libraries across the city with story times attended by pupils from local schools visiting libraries to celebrate this special literary day. The Bookstart Bookcrawl is aimed at the babies and parents who can visit their local library to collect special stickers. After four visits they are awarded a certificate and after forty visits a gold certificate. Groups who could benefit from the Bookstart Bookcrawl should contact jen.brown@newcastle.gov.uk.

Reluctant readers are invited to take part in the Six Book Challenge which will be launched at City Library at 10am. The challenge will support less confident readers and those taking part will be given a diary to record their progress and success. If you have access to a group that would benefit from joining this challenge contact sharon.reeve@newcastle.gov.uk.

Free tickets are available for the World Book Day event below by phoning 0191 2774100 or emailing information@newcastle.gov.uk.

James McKay – A Quiet Circus

Performance poetry organisation, Apples and Snakes, present an exclusive recitation by poet James McKay especially for World Book Day.

He will be reading poems from his brand new collection ‘Quiet Circus’ and afterwards will be dispensing advice and words of wisdom about the craft of poetry writing in an open mentoring session. This is a fantastic event giving you the opportunity to hear the work of a very talented and successful young poet and to cultivate your own talent and ideas.

In October last year, Patrick Stringer began homework help sessions called Grid Club every Tuesday’s from 5pm to 6pm at City Library. This has been a great success and we have regulars children along with newcomers at each session.

In December last year, we had a sparkling Wychwood Fairies event with children coming along dressed up and one lucky fairy won the beautiful book by Faye Durston. Due to popular demand, Faye is back at Gosforth Library on Friday 25 February from 11am to 12noon. Come along to meet Faye and enjoy taking part in a bit of fairy magic at the craft session. Suitable for children aged 6 and over. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult. To book phone 0191 2774100 or ask at any library.

It always feels a bit sad when you have to put all the Christmas decorations away and box them up for another year. However, that’s done now and the Children’s team are eagerly planning new events and author visits for a fun-packed 2011.

This year we are launching our ‘author of the month’ as a regular feature and we have chosen Giles Andreae for January. We’ve put a collection of his books on display on level 3 for you to have a look at. If you need any help choosing books please ask a member of staff who will be happy to assist.

Giles has written many books for the very young…

and for newly fluent readers.

Jenni Reay, our student volunteer, has been working on gathering a great list of authors for the coming year to suit all ages and tastes. Here’s what she has to say about Giles:

‘Giles Andreae has a talent for creating side splitting humour within four lines of text and he typically writes his books for under five’s in the format of short poems which are ideal for dipping in and out of with younger readers. Fun fact: Giles attended Eton College where he was best friends with David Cameron!’

Sadly, one of our best loved childrens’ authors, Dick King-Smith, has died, aged 88. He was author of ‘The Sheep-Pig’, the book that inspired the Oscar-winning film ‘Babe’. Dick sold over five million books in Britain. Reserve a book by Dick King-Smith.

We’re pleased to announce that we have subscribed to Clear Vision - a UK postal lending library for mainstream children’s books with added Braille. The books all have Braille (or Moon), print and pictures making them suitable for visually-impaired and sighted children and adults to share.

If you would like to borrow Clear Vision books please contact 0191 2774100 and we will arrange for the books to be delivered to your nearest library. We can also obtain non-fiction books, books for teenagers, books if you are learning to read and books for the very young from Clear Vision. Welcome also to Chris Rutherford, a new member of the children’s team, who has started work on Clear Vision and will be as well as a new project in local schools.

It was mixed emotions all round when the Little Owls of Outer West had their final storytime and party before the summer break. Everyone enjoyed the songs, stories, good company and, of course, food! But it was very much the end of an era as several of the children have ‘graduated’ to nursery or playgroup and will not be attending again in the autumn.

Everyone was grateful to Nicola Dickinson who runs the group and has been involved not only with these children but with older and brothers and sisters and so has become almost a ‘friend of the family’ to some.

All the children received ‘graduation’ certificates and know they are welcome to continue to visit the library and choose books, DVDs or use the internet.

Little Owls storytime runs every Monday morning in term time from 10.30am. We look forward to just as much fun with the class of 2010. Phone Outer West library on 0191 2772790 to book a place at the next session.
