Children’s author of the month: Eric Carle
September can be a daunting time for young people about to start school but Eric Carle writes a lot of his books with this theme in mind.
He writes, “I believe the passage from home to school is the second biggest trauma of childhood; the first is, of course, being born. Indeed, in both cases we leave a place of warmth and protection for one that is unknown. The unknown often brings fear with it. In my books I try to counteract this fear, to replace it with a positive message. I believe that children are naturally creative and eager to learn. I want to show them that learning is really both fascinating and fun.”

Children’s author of the month: Philip Pulman
Pulman’s ‘His Dark Materials’ series of books have been hugely successful since their release in 1995. The books have been reprinted numerous times and ‘Northern Lights’ has been made into a film called ‘The Golden Compass’.
Pulman has also written popular books for adults.

Children’s author of the month: Titania Woods
Titania Woods is the nom de plume that L. A. Weatherly uses to write her ‘Glitterwing Academy’ books. Titania even loves to dress up as a fairy herself and her name is the same as the queen of the fairies in Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.
Located inside a giant oak tree, Glitterwings Academy is a fairy-school. The fairies live in branches and attend classes where they sit on mushroom seats. Books are suitable for children aged 6 to 8 years old.

Spot is the world’s favourite puppy! Spot was created by Eric Hill and ‘Where’s Spot?’ was published in 1980. This was one of the first ever lift the flap books and started off the publishing concept of ‘interactive books for babies’. Spot books are suitable for children aged 5 and under.

Children’s author of the month: L. J. Smith
Author of the hugely popular ‘The Vampire Diaries’, L. J. Smith has been writing teen horror romance for quite a while and was a contributor to the craze that was Point Horror series in the 1990s. Many of her popular Point Horror titles have been re-released in 2010 and loads more are due to be released as a series called ‘The Night World’ in July 2011. So L. J. Smith is set to get even bigger!

Children’s author of the month: Roald Dahl
One of the world’s best loved storytellers with a wide collection of books for young and older children and adults. His story telling style is darkly honest, dealing with poverty, witches and nasty grown-up’s but giving hope at the same time. James and The Giant Peach is a classic example of a child in an impossible situation being looked after by two aunts who loathe him, so what does Dahl do? Gives an impossible solution, James runs away in an oversized peach with a collection of big bugs. Escapism at it’s best whatever age you are.
