Newcastle Libraries are joining up with Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) for Make a Noise in Libraries Fortnight from Monday 11 June to Sunday 24 June 2012. This annual campaign led by the RNIB aims to bring libraries and blind and partially sighted people together to improve access to books and information. We’re hosting a range of activities that include:
Sessions with a reading buddy to help visually impaired customers use the library
The buddy can help customers choose library materials, provide basic IT support, assist with general enquiries and be your guide through the library.
Internet taster sessions
Wednesday 13 June and Wednesday 20 June
2:30pm – 3:30pm, City Library
Staff will help visually impaired customers to use the internet using specialist IT software such as Thunder, Webbie and Supernova. Sessions will last for approximately one hour.
A brand new collection of audio books called Playaways.
Playaways are the newest format of audio book and combine a very simple player with digital audio book content. They are compact, easy to use and suitable for adults and children.
A visit from author and poet, Craig Bradley
Monday 18 June
Children’s session 10:30am – 11:30am, adult’s session 2:20pm – 3:30pm
Craig will be here to read a selection of his work to a blind and visually impaired audience. His sessions are always humorous and very entertaining. Places are limited so reserve yours today.
An exhibition of artefacts from the RNIB
From 11 – 24 June, Level 3, City Library
Items on display include books in Braille, Moon and a Braille typewriter. There will also be information on the history of reading and writing for blind people.
