Tasters and Christmas Greetings!

December 10th, 2007

Hello downloaders - apologies for the delay in responding to your comments, but thanks very much for the positive feedback.

If anyone would like to arrange an introductory taster session on downloading music, please e-mail me at andrew.scrogham@newcastle.gov.uk  A member of library staff would be more than happy to arrange a session suitable to you.

I suppose I’d better wish everyone a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year while I’m here…has anyone got an ipod or mp3 player on their Christmas List?

Newcastle Libraries Download project will shortly be adding another cutting edge music site to our list - emusic.

eMusic makes all their music available as MP3s. That means that tracks downloaded play  on any digital media player including the iPod ®. eMusic offers a diverse catalogue of over 2 million songs from over 13,000 record labels around the world.  Subscriptions start from £8.99 for 30 downloads per month, and there are often free trials, allowing you a limited number of downloads without charge.

Welcome to Download

January 8th, 2007

Music-lovers in Newcastle can discover the hottest new bands and latest music trends simply by popping in to their local library.

A pilot scheme in the city’s East End, Fenham and Outer West libraries is giving people the chance to download music from the internet.

If the scheme is successful it will be extended to all libraries in the city next year.

Coun Pauline Allen, Executive Member for Culture, Heritage, Libraries and Sport at Newcastle City Council, said: “It is important that the library service keeps pace with trends in accessing music.

“Providing a download service in local libraries makes this available to people who do not have their own computers at home.”

People can use computers in the libraries free of charge, although they may have to pay to download music from some of the sites.

As well as music people will also be able to download talking books.

There will be two dedicated download computers in the three libraries taking part in the pilot.

People will be able to book the computers for an hour at a time and will have access to five selected download sites via icons on the computer desktop
